If you’ve ever used a hammer drive anchor, you know how easy they are to install. But what about when it’s time to remove them? Here’s a quick guide on how to remove hammer drive anchors, so you can get the job done quickly and easily.

Hammer Drive Anchor

What is a Hammer Drive Anchor?

The hammer drive anchor is a metal sleeve that houses a nail-like point. The sleeve is driven into the hole with a hammer, and the point penetrates the wall material. The Anchor is then expanded by driving the nail-like point further into the sleeve. This creates a tight fit and a secure hold.

Why Do Hammer Drive Anchors Need to Be Removed?

Ideal for use in block, brick, or concrete, the hammer drive anchor is a great choice when you need a secure, permanent hold. It is commonly used in light to medium-duty applications, such as electrical boxes, drywall tracks, and nameplates.

However, there are times when you may need to remove a hammer drive anchor. For example, if you’re doing a home renovation and need to move an electrical box, you’ll need to remove the hammer drive anchors holding it in place.

Or, if you’re removing a nameplate from a wall, you’ll need to remove the hammer drive anchors holding it in place. Also, over time the Anchor may become discolored or rusty and need to be replaced.

What Are Hammer Drive Anchors Made of?

The body of Hammer Drive Anchors is typically made of unique non-rusting material called Zamac. The pin is usually made of zinc-plated carbon steel or stainless steel.

However, it is also available in other materials, though they may not provide the same level of performance. Therefore, I suggest using Zamac metal for its durability and resistance to rust.

How to Remove Hammer Drive Anchors?

There are several strange ways people find to remove Hammer Drive Anchors. Many of these ways can cause damage to the surrounding area. I will avoid those ways and present two ways which will keep you away from harm. So let’s explore the ways-

Ensure Safety: Wear hand gloves and working safety glasses before work.

Method 1

In the first method, you will need,

  1. Mini Hacksaw Frame with HSS Blade
  2. Claw Hammer (Alternative- flat prybar)
  3. Knife or chisel (Optional)

Step – 1

The first step is to start cutting the protruding part of the body of the Hammer Drive Anchor with the Mini Hacksaw Blade. Special care should be taken to ensure that the pin or nail in the Anchor is not cut.

Cut Hammer Drive Anchor with the Mini Hacksaw Blade

(Big Hacksaws are obstructed from reaching the Anchor many times, so if you have the opportunity, you can use a portable electric hacksaw.)

Step – 2

After using the hacksaw, you will find several hollow areas around the nail head. Place the hammer’s claw in the hollow part of the nail head and apply pressure to remove the nail from the body. Before pressing, use something thin (like wood, plastic, or a screwdriver) under the hammer to help remove the nail.

Note: If the hacksaw doesn’t reach the Anchor, use a knife or chisel to create space.

Method 2

This method will create a hole in your wall or wood, which can then be filled with a mixture of wall filler and wood filler. If the head of your hammer drive anchor breaks, this method will allow you to remove it quickly.

For this project, you will need a drill and a 3/8″ Diameter Screw Extractor.

First, remove a drive anchor using a screw extractor, and adjust the extractor to fit the drill. Next, slowly drill into the Anchor while keeping the extractor in place. Once the drill reaches the same depth as the Anchor, use pliers to remove the Anchor from the hole.

Note: This Screw Extractor is designed for use with wood but can also be used on concrete and brick.

Can You Reuse Hammer Drive Anchors?

No, you cannot reuse hammer drive anchors. They lose their shape after removal, making them unusable.

Conclusion

Hammer Drive Anchors are the way to go if you are looking for a secure and permanent hold. They are easy to install and provide a great deal of holding power. However, there are times when you may need to remove them. The methods provided in this article will help you to remove Hammer Drive Anchors without damage.
